Qu'est-ce que le volant moteur ?

Le volant moteur est une pièce lourde qui peut peser jusqu’à 10 kg. C’est un disque en fonte qui dispose d’une frette dentée sur son pourtour. On le trouve juste avant l’embrayage, à la sortie du moteur, fixé au vilebrequin qui lui transmet son mouvement de rotation.

Les fonctions que le volant moteur assure sont vitales pour la voiture. Il assure d’abord la transmission de la rotation du moteur en direction des roues à l’embrayage et à la boîte de vitesses.

De plus, il fait à la fois partie du moteur et de l’embrayage : il y joue des rôles différents, mais cruciaux pour les 2 pièces. Il transmet non seulement la rotation du moteur, mais il permet aussi de la réguler. Par l’embrayage, il participe grâce à sa frette au démarrage du véhicule.

Pour récapituler, le volant moteur a plusieurs fonctions :

Il transmet la rotation du moteur à l'embrayage et à la boîte de vitesses. Il est fixé à l'embrayage par le vilebrequin.
Il fait partie de l'embrayage et il est fixé au disque d'embrayage. Lorsque vous débrayez, vous séparez les différentes pièces de l'embrayage pour passer les vitesses.
Il permet de démarrer : l'engrenage du moteur s'enquille dans les dents du volant moteur par le démarreur et permet d'entraîner le moteur.
Il régule la rotation du moteur et limite ainsi ses à-coups, les calages, etc.

Sachez qu'il existe deux types de volant moteur : le volant moteur bi-masse et le volant moteur rigide, ou fixe. Le volant moteur fixe est composé d'une seule pièce en métal tandis que le volant moteur bi-masse possède deux pièces, avec une autre partie à l'intérieur montée sur ressort.

Comment fonctionne le volant-moteur ?

Le volant moteur fait partie du système d’embrayage, composé également d’une butée d’embrayage, d’un disque d’embrayage et d’une plaque de pression. Le volant moteur exerce une pression sur le disque d’embrayage en accord avec la plaque de pression.

Comment entretenir le volant moteur ?

Bien qu’il n’existe aucun moyen d’entretenir au sens propre le volant moteur, certaines choses sont à savoir pour améliorer sa durée de vie.

D’abord, l’usure d’un disque d’embrayage peut provoquer des marques sur la surface du volant moteur et ainsi l’abîmer. Mais ce n’est pas tout, car le pignon du démarreur est également susceptible de causer des dégâts à la frette dentée du volant moteur. Si le joint spi du volant moteur n'assure plus son étanchéité, cela peut également endommager votre volant moteur.

Ce qu’il faut retenir : prenez soin des pièces auxquelles le volant moteur est lié. Changez votre embrayage et ses composants, particulièrement le disque dès que nécessaire, et il devrait ne jamais être défectueux ! Rappelez-vous également que rouler avec un volant moteur HS peut être très dangereux.
