How do the brake discs work ?

The disc brake is a braking type equipping the cars. There are other braking systems, including the drum brake. On current cars, disc brakes systematically equip the front wheels, the rear wheels sometimes having a drum brake.

The disc braking system consists of three mechanical elements:

• TheBrake caliper ; ;
• The brake pads ; ;
• The brake disc him-same.

The disc is connected to the brake caliper and platelets. It is fixed on the hub wheel. When you press the brake pedal, you operate a piston that puts pressure on the brake fluid. The-cI then actuates the brake caliper, which press the pads on the brake disc. It is this friction that makes it possible to slow the rotation of the disc and curb your vehicle.

But there are different types of brake discs:

• The full brake disc : It is a solid metal disc, which has no groove. Its cooling is less good, but the disc can exceed 600 ° C during braking.
• The ventilated brake disc : The disc has two faces between which an empty space allows better ventilation.
• The grooved brake disc : It has grooves on its surface, which allow a better cooling of the disc by increasing the friction.
• The perforated brake disc : It has holes on its surface, which allow rainwater to flow easily and to promote the cooling of the disc.

The full brake disc is the cheapest, but it is also the oldest. Above all, it evacuates the heat less well than a ventilated, grooved or perforated brake disc, while the action of the platelets on the disk generates a friction that raises the brake disc in temperature when you brake.

Note, however, that you do not choose the type of disk when you change your brake discs. Indeed, the original brake discs must be respected.

When to change your brake discs ?

The discs and brake pads are wear parts. It is therefore necessary to change them periodically. In general, it is considered that the brake discs of a car must be changed every 30 to 40,000 kilometers. The pads are to be replaced every 15 to 20,000 kilometers, the discs being changed once out of two.

However, the replacement interval of the brake discs naturally depends on their wear. That-cI varies according to the weight of your car, the roads on which you circulate but also your conduct. Winding roads or frequent and brutal braking obviously use brake discs faster.

The manufacturers plan a minimal the brake disc that must be respected. It appears in your maintenance book. The thickness of the brake disc must be controlled regularly to ensure that you follow this dimension and roll safely. The brake discs must be changed when their thickness is no longer sufficient.

How do you know if the brake discs are dead ?

Braking is part of the most demanded systems in your vehicle, and brake discs are wear parts to monitor regularly to ensure safely. Your brake discs have a minimum thickness rating that you have to control.

When the thickness of the disc approach this rating, it is worn and it must be changed. It is possible to measure the thickness of a disc with a specific tool (the Palmer) easily found in store or of a slide foot.

But worn or damaged brake discs also have symptoms, for example:

• Thelength of braking distances ; ;
• Of noise during braking ;
• Of at-shots brakes ;
• One problem at the brake pedal, which is hard, soft or sinking without resistance.

If you meet one of these symptoms, consult a garage without delay. It is of course very dangerous to roll with worn or damaged brake discs.
