How does the brake discs work?

Disc brake is a type of braking that equips cars. There are other braking systems, including drum brake. On current cars, disc brakes systematically equip front wheels, with rear wheels sometimes equipped with a drum brake.

The disc braking system consists of three mechanical components:

• I-Ibrake bracket ;
• The brake pads ;
• The brake disc him-even.

The disc is connected to the brake bracket and pads. It is fixed on the hub from the wheel. When you press the brake pedal, you operate a piston that presses the brake fluid. The-this then activates the brake rod, which presses the pads on the brake disc. It is this friction that slows the rotation of the disc and brakes your vehicle.

But there are different types of brake discs:

• Full brake disc this is a solid metal disc, which has no grooves. Its cooling is less good, but the disc can exceed 600°C during braking.
• Ventilated brake disc : the disc has two sides between which an empty space allows better ventilation.
• The grooved brake disc : it has grooves on its surface, which allow better cooling of the disc by increasing friction.
• The perforated brake disc : it has holes on its surface, which allow rainwater to flow easily and promote the cooling of the disc.

The full brake disc is the cheapest, but it is also the oldest. Above all, it removes less heat than a ventilated, grooved or perforated brake disc, while the action of the pads on the disc generates friction that causes the brake disc to rise to temperature when you brake.

Note, however, that you do not have the choice of disc type when changing your brake discs. The original brake discs must be respected.

When do you change your brake discs?

Brake discs and pads are wear parts. It is therefore necessary to change them periodically. In general, the brake discs of a car must be changed every 30 to 40,000 kilometres. Platelets to replace every 15 to 20,000 kilometres, the discs being changed once in two.

However, the replacement interval of brake discs naturally depends on their wear and tear. The-this varies according to the weight of your car, the roads you drive on, but also your driving. Of course, winding roads or frequent and rough brakings use brake discs faster.

The thickness of the brake disc must therefore be checked regularly to ensure that you respect this rating and drive safely. Brake discs shall be changed when their thickness is no longer sufficient.

How do I know if the brake discs are dead?

Braking is one of the busiest systems in your vehicle, and brake discs are wear and tear parts to be monitored regularly to make sure you ride safely. Your brake discs have a minimum thickness rating we have to check.

When the thickness of the disc approaches this rating, it is worn out and must be changed. It is possible to measure the thickness of a disc with a specific tool (the palmer) easily found in store or a slide foot.

But worn or damaged brake discs also have symptoms, for example:

• I-Ilengthening of braking distances ;
• From noise during braking;
• The to-strokes brakes;
• One brake pedal problem, which is hard, soft or sinks without resistance.

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a garage operator without delay. It is of course very dangerous to drive with worn or damaged brake discs.
