How do brake discs work ?

The disc brake is a type of braking fitted to cars. There are other braking systems, including the drum brake. On current cars, disc brakes are systematically fitted to the front wheels, the rear wheels sometimes having a drum brake.

The disc braking system is made up of three mechanical elements:

• I'Brake caliper ; ;
• THE brake pads ; ;
• THE brake disc him-even.

The disc is connected to the brake caliper and the pads. It is fixed on the hub of the wheel. When you press the brake pedal, you actuate a piston which puts pressure on the brake fluid. That's why I wrote to you-this then activates the brake caliper, which presses the pads on the brake disc. It is this friction that slows the rotation of the disc and brakes your vehicle.

But there are different types of brake discs:

• Full brake disc : it is a solid metal disc, which has no grooves. Its cooling is less good, but the disc can exceed 600°C during braking.
• The ventilated brake disc : the disc has two sides between which an empty space allows better ventilation.
• The grooved brake disc : it has grooves on its surface, which allow better cooling of the disc by increasing friction.
• Perforated brake disc : it has holes on its surface, which allow rainwater to flow easily and promote the cooling of the disc.

The solid brake disc is the cheapest, but it is also the oldest. Above all, it dissipates heat less well than a ventilated, grooved or perforated brake disc, while the action of the pads on the disc generates friction which causes the brake disc to heat up when you brake.

Note, however, that you have no choice of disc type when changing your brake discs. Indeed, the original brake discs must be respected.

When to change your brake discs ?

Brake discs and pads are wearing parts. It is therefore necessary to change them periodically. In general, it is considered that the brake discs of a car must be changed every 30-40 thousand kilometers. Pads need to be replaced every 15 to 20 thousand kilometers, the discs therefore being changed every other time.

However, the replacement interval of the brake discs naturally depends on their wear. That-this varies according to the weight of your car, the roads on which you drive but also your driving. Winding roads or frequent and brutal braking obviously wear out the brake discs more quickly.

Manufacturers are planning a minimum odds of the brake disc which must be observed. It is in your service book. The thickness of the brake disc must therefore be checked regularly to ensure that you respect this dimension and drive safely. Brake discs must be changed when their thickness is no longer sufficient.

How do you know if the brake discs are dead ?

Braking is one of the most stressed systems in your vehicle, and brake discs are wearing parts that must be checked regularly to ensure that you drive safely. Your brake discs have a minimum thickness rating that need to be controlled.

When the thickness of the disc approaches this dimension, it is worn and must be changed. It is possible to measure the thickness of a disc with a specific tool (the palmer) easily found in stores or with a caliper.

But worn or damaged brake discs also have symptoms, for example:

• I'increased braking distances ; ;
• Of noise when braking ;
• Of the To-strokes brake ;
• A brake pedal problem, which is hard, soft or sinks without resistance.

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a mechanic without delay. It is of course very dangerous to drive with worn or damaged brake discs.
