Thealternator is one of the most important electrical organs of a car-free car. It is responsible for transforming the mechanical energy produced by the engine into electrical energy, in order to recharge the battery and power the electrical systems of the vehicle. Without an alternator in good condition, the battery discharges quickly and the vehicle may fail, even in the process.
The alternator works with a belt connected to the motor. When the one-CI rotates, the rotation causes the alternator pulley that generates an alternating current. This current is then straightened to become DC current and recharge the battery. The electricity produced also feeds the fires, the dashboard, the ventilation system, and all the electronic equipment of the car.
• Reload the battery continuously when the engine is running.
• Furnle the electrical equipment (headlights, flashing, paper towels-Ice cream, dashboard).
• Maintain a stable voltage to protect electronic components.
• Avoid that the battery does not discharge prematurely.
• Ensure optimal operation by all times and all types of trips.
A failed alternator causes a gradual discharge of the battery and may result in complete shutdown of the vehicle. In addition, the electrical equipment starts to operate randomly: the headlights can weaken, the dashboard go off and the starts become increasingly difficult to total immobilization.
Quickly identify a tired alternator avoids a failure. Here are the most common signs:
• Battery indicator on the dashboard.
• Headlights that drop intensity when the engine is idling.
• Hissing or grinding noise from the alternator belt.
• Odor of rubber burned (belt that patina).
• Relaxed, cracked or damaged strap.
• Battery that discharges quickly.
• Difficult or impossible starts after a short trip.
• Strange behaviors of electrical equipment (slower flashing, dashboard that goes out).
• Inadequate voltage measurement with a multimeter (less than 13.5 V rotating motor).
Regular control of the alternator and its belt makes it possible to extend its life and to prevent failures. It is recommended to check the tension of the belt, replace it if it has cracks or wear signs, and test the charging voltage with a multimeter.
• Check the tension of the belt and its visual condition.
• Listen if the alternator emits abnormal noise (bearing, whistling).
• Measure the rotating motor output voltage (between 13.8 and 14.5 volts ideally).
• Check the electrical connections and the cleanliness of the lugs.
• Clean the dust or oil residues that may interfere with rotation.
If the alternator does not work anymore or provides insufficient load, it must be replaced. A new or reconditioned alternator allows you to find a reliable electrical system and optimal battery charging.
• Always unplug the battery before intervention.
• Replace the alternator belt if it is worn or relaxed.
• Check the alignment of the pulleys to prevent premature wear.
• Check the charging voltage after mounting.
• Keep the old part for setpoint or recycling according to supplier.
