How do brake discs work?

The disc brake is a type of braking equipping cars. There are other braking systems, including drum brake. On current cars, the disc brakes systematically equip the front wheels, the rear wheels sometimes having a drum brake.

The disc braking system consists of three mechanical elements:

• L’brake caliper ;
• The brake pads ;
• The brake disc him-even.

The disc is connected to the brake caliper and the pads. It is fixed on the moyeu wheel. When you press the brake pedal, you activate a piston that puts pressure on brake fluid. But there are different types of brake discs:

• The grooved brake disc : it has grooves on its surface, which allow a better cooling of the disc by increasing friction.
• The perforated brake disc : it has holes on its surface, which allow rain water to flow easily and promote the cooling of the disc.

The full brake disc is the cheapest, but it is also the oldest. Above all, it evacuates the heat less well than a ventilated, grooved or perforated brake disc, while the action of the pads on the disc results in a friction that causes the brake disc to rise in temperature when you brake.

Note, however, that you do not have the choice of disk type when changing your brake discs. Indeed, the original brake discs must be respected.

When do you change your brake discs?

Brake discs and pads are wear parts. It is therefore necessary to change them periodically. In general, a car’s brake discs should be changed all 30 to 40,000 kilometres. Plates are to be replaced all 15 to 20,000 kilometres, the discs being changed once on two.

However, the brake disc replacement interval naturally depends on their wear. The-this varies according to the weight of your car, the roads on which you travel but also your driving. Silent roads or frequent and rough braking obviously use brake discs faster.

Manufacturers provide for one minimum the brake disc that must be respected. It appears in your interview book. The thickness of the brake disc must be checked regularly to ensure you respect this rating and drive safely. Brake discs must be changed when their thickness is not sufficient.

How do I know if the brake discs are dead?

Braking is one of the most sought-after systems in your vehicle, and brake discs are wear parts to be monitored regularly to ensure you ride safely. Your brake discs have a minimum thickness rating must be controlled.

When the disc thickness approaches this rating, it is worn and it must be changed. It is possible to measure the thickness of a disc with a specific tool (the palm) easily found in store or a sliding foot.

But worn or damaged brake discs also have symptoms, for example:

• L’extension of braking distances ;
• Dude noise during braking;
• Des to-shot brakes;
• One brake pedal problem, that is hard, soft or that sinks without resistance.
